girls' travel guide to detroit, mi + toledo, oh.

Updated: Feb 12

Plan your next girls' trip with our midwest travel guide to Detroit and Toledo for thrifting, cocktails, restaurants + a cookie decorating class | Meghan Kennedy 2/5/2024

A quick flight from Philly to Detroit and Mallory and I were off on our girls' adventure visiting Eden (_edenphoto) in her hometown of Toledo, OH this past weekend.

WHERE WE ATE:

WHAT WE DID:

We spent Friday exploring Detroit - sipping on cocktails at @candybardetroit in the stunning @thesirenhotel followed by delicious Detroit-style pizza at @grandmabobspizza.

I loved the colorful graffiti art the city had to offer with a mix of old meets new architecture around every corner.

Saturday was a thrift and pamper kind of day with our first stop at @heavywheelhouse in @oakopenings Park for @blackkitecoffee and a little nature walk.

Next up - The Beauty Bar for a quick pedicure, @localrootsjuiceco for a delicious açaí bowl and @swancreekcandleco for homemade candles and soap.

Our main stop on Saturday was the iconic @maumeeantique mall.

This antique mall may just be the biggest I've ever seen with over 200 dealers within a 110,000 sq. ft. warehouse! I always leave extra room in my suitcase to bring treasures home. I scored some vintage kitchen utensils and the sweetest vintage dresses for our upcoming honeymoon to Maui.

We gorged on hummus, veggies, and lamb paired with a delicious pinot noir at @pocopiatti followed by a craft night in with girlfriends - painting tote bags and devouring cherry and peach pie from @schmuckersrestaurant.

Sunday was an extra special day touring the Toledo Museum of Art (@toledomuseum) as well as Eden's photography studio, @suite100toledo!

A full circle moment viewing Florence Scott Libbey’s extensive art collection at the museum. Florence was married to the “father of the glass industry”, Edward Drummond Libbey in 1890. When the museum opened in 1912, Florence donated her entire art collection and after her husband's passing in 1925, Florence served as trustee and vice president of the Toledo Museum. During the Great Depression Florence financed construction of the music wings of the Museum - keeping over 3,000 people employed!

We offer so many vintage Libbey pieces in our lucid ladybug curations - check out one of our favorite sets here. The name "Florence" is extra special because it was my Mom Mop's name and it is also the name of the town we currently reside in.

Following the art museum we made a pit stop at @maddieandbella coffee roasters for lattes and breakfast biscuits before whisking off to Eden's studio for a cookie decorating class with @patisserievillage. In the spirit of Valentine's Day, we hand-decorated sweet-shaped cookies with pink, red, green, and white icing. Check out our video reel here.

This BYO, hands-on class includes everything you need to decorate your cookies plus recipes, a baking tray, and a decorating tool to take home. It was so relaxing and fun to follow along with Erica -who has been baking, decorating, and teaching for over 20 years!

After our cookies were complete we hung in the studio for headshots by the incredibly talented, _edenphoto before heading to @houseofdow for more vintage finds. I am giddy with excitement over the pieces we found in this eclectic shop organized by decade - my favorite way to shop!

Dinner at @el_vaquero_mexican_restaurant did not disappoint and The Ribbon at Glass City Metropark was so cool to see - a 1,000-foot loop trail featuring rolling hills and soft curves for a unique ice skating experience.

Monday we drove past the University of Michigan and poked around Ann Arbor visiting the West Side Book Shop - where books have been sold since 1888. @hyperioncoffee served up a delicious oat latte to sip on before our final Midwest meal at @zingermansdeli (turkey Ruben for me - truly perfection).

No girls' trip is complete without a rom-com or two so Mallory and I watched 13 Going on 30 on the @americanair flight home.

The opportunity to travel and explore someplace new energizes me and inspires my creativity. I am so grateful for every new experience that comes my way and even more grateful for the girlfriends I can share the ride with! Cheers to more adventures in 2024. XO, Meghan
